Beyond Traditional Markets

Looking past public stocks and bonds — thoughtfully, and with eyes open to the trade-offs.

Alternative investments may offer access to opportunities outside traditional public stocks and bonds, but they can also involve different risks, liquidity constraints, fees, structures, and time horizons.

Why It Matters

Broaden the Investment Conversation

Most portfolios are built from publicly traded stocks, bonds, and cash. Alternative investments extend beyond those building blocks and may include private equity, private credit, real estate, hedge strategies, infrastructure, commodities, and other nontraditional approaches.

These investments can work very differently from what many investors are used to. They may be harder to sell, valued less frequently, more expensive to own, and available only to investors who meet certain income or net worth requirements.

For that reason, alternatives are best considered in the context of your complete financial plan — your liquidity needs, risk tolerance, tax considerations, and long-term goals — rather than as a stand-alone opportunity.

Our Approach

Our Approach to Alternative Investments

  1. Evaluate the Role of Alternatives

The first question is not which alternative to choose, but whether alternatives belong in your plan at all.

We consider your goals, liquidity needs, existing portfolio, and eligibility to help determine whether alternative investments may have an appropriate role — and, if so, how limited or meaningful that role should be.

  2. Understand Risk, Liquidity & Time Horizon

Alternative investments often behave differently from publicly traded stocks and bonds.

We review lock-up periods, redemption limits, valuation methods, the use of leverage, concentration, and other risks that may differ from traditional investments, so the commitment is understood before any decision is made.

  3. Diversification & Portfolio Integration

Any allocation to alternatives should fit within the portfolio as a whole.

We evaluate how an alternative strategy may interact with public-market investments, cash needs, income objectives, and your overall asset allocation, recognizing that diversification does not ensure a profit or protect against loss.

  4. Ongoing Review & Due Diligence

An alternative investment is not a one-time decision.

We review exposure over time — including structure, manager considerations, liquidity, fees, performance relative to expectations, and whether the investment remains suitable as your circumstances change.

The Bigger Picture

Alternatives Are Not One-Size-Fits-All

Alternative investments can be complex, and they are not appropriate for every investor.

Whether they have a place in your portfolio depends on your individual circumstances — your liquidity needs, risk tolerance, time horizon, tax situation, and how the rest of your portfolio is constructed.

Our role is to help you understand the trade-offs clearly and to evaluate any alternative allocation carefully within your broader financial plan, coordinating with your tax and legal professionals where their expertise is needed.

Alternative investments may be speculative and involve substantial risk, including the possible loss of some or all of the principal invested. They may have limited or no liquidity, higher fees and expenses, complex structures, the use of leverage, less regulatory oversight, and limited transparency into holdings and valuations. They are generally available only to investors who meet specific eligibility requirements and are not suitable for all investors. Diversification does not ensure a profit or protect against loss. Past performance is no guarantee of future results. A Blancq Canvas Wealth Management does not provide tax or legal advice; please consult qualified professionals regarding your specific situation.
